See the World Through Animal Eyes with Innovative Technology

January 28, 2024

Scientists from the UK and the US have developed a new technology that enables humans to view the world through the eyes of animals with enhanced accuracy. The technology works by using two cameras – one sensitive to ultraviolet light, the other to visible light – and a beam splitter allows the passage of visible light while reflecting UV light. The captured data is then processed by software, transforming it into perceptual units for animal viewing. In trials on honeybees and UV-sensitive birds, the technology achieved an accuracy of 99%. Funding from National Geographic and a collaboration with wildlife photographer Neil Losin will help to further develop the technology and explore its potential in nature documentaries.
